Website design and SEO,planned as one project

Most sites are designed first and optimised later, which is why so many look good and rank badly. We deliver website design and SEO as a single project for Canadian businesses: SEO web page design, content, code and performance decided together from the first sketch rather than retrofitted after launch.

Search-led architecture

The case for doing both

Why web design and SEO belong in the same plan

Search visibility is mostly a by-product of decisions made during a build. Once those decisions are shipped, changing them is a second project.

Architecture is a design decision and a ranking decision

The page structure a designer draws becomes the URL structure search engines crawl. When the sitemap is agreed before the first layout, every service and location has a real page to rank instead of being buried inside a scrolling homepage.

Search intent should shape the layout, not fight it

Once you know what people actually type and what they expect to see, the page can answer it in the first screen. Retrofitting that later usually means rewriting sections that were designed around a different message.

Performance is largely decided during the build

Image handling, font loading, script weight and rendering approach are all set in development. Core Web Vitals problems created there are expensive to remove afterwards and cheap to avoid at the start.

Redesigns lose rankings when SEO arrives last

A new site with changed URLs, missing redirects or removed content can undo years of search equity. Planning the migration alongside the design protects the traffic you already have.

None of this makes design secondary. A site still has to be persuasive, credible and pleasant to use, because rankings only matter if the visit turns into an enquiry. The point is that SEO and website design share the same raw material: structure, content, speed and clarity, so treating them as two separate purchases creates rework rather than better results.

How the work runs

Our web SEO design process, from research to measurement

Every stage produces something you can review, so you are never asked to approve a finished site you have seen for the first time.

  1. 01

    Research and search mapping

We start with your customers and your market: the services that make money, the terms people use to find them, the questions that come up on sales calls, and how competing Canadian sites are structured. The output is a keyword-to-page map, not a keyword list.

    • Commercial, informational and local query grouping
    • Competitor structure and content-gap review
    • Priority pages ranked by demand and business value
  2. 02

    Information architecture and wireframes

The sitemap, URL structure and internal linking model are agreed before visual design begins. Each page gets a defined purpose, a primary query group, a heading outline and a conversion goal.

    • Flat, crawlable URL structure
    • Navigation and internal link plan
    • Page-level briefs with headings and intent
  3. 03

    Content and design in parallel

Copy and layout are produced together so the design serves the message. Sections are built around real content rather than placeholder text that gets shortened at the last minute.

    • Search-informed copy written for people first
    • Design system, typography and component library
    • Accessible colour contrast and focus states
  4. 04

Development with technical SEO built in

The build ships with clean semantic markup, server-rendered content, sensible metadata, canonical tags, structured data where it reflects what is on the page, and an XML sitemap that matches the real architecture.

    • Semantic HTML and one H1 per page
    • Canonical tags, robots rules and sitemap
    • Structured data only where it is accurate
  5. 05

    Performance, QA and migration

Before launch we test on real devices and connections, tune Core Web Vitals, and, for a redesign, map every existing URL to its replacement so nothing lands on a 404.

    • Image, font and script optimization
    • Cross-device and accessibility QA
    • 301 redirect map for redesigns
  6. 06

    Launch, measurement and iteration

Analytics, conversion tracking and Search Console are configured at launch so you can see what search brings in and what it does once it arrives. From there, improvements are based on data instead of opinion.

    • Analytics and conversion goals
    • Search Console setup and indexation checks
    • Ongoing content and CRO priorities

A closer look at how we run projects generally is on our process page.

Built into the code

SEO in website design: technical foundations set during the build

These are not add-ons. They are the conditions that let good content get found at all.

Crawlable, server-rendered pages

Content that search engines can read without executing a pile of JavaScript, with clean semantic markup and descriptive link text.

Metadata that matches the page

Unique titles and descriptions written for the query the page targets and the person reading the result, not padded with repeated phrases.

Indexation control

Canonical tags, a maintained XML sitemap, sensible robots directives and no accidental duplicate or thin pages competing with each other.

Core Web Vitals

Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint and Cumulative Layout Shift are treated as build requirements, measured on mobile hardware.

Mobile-first interface work

Tap targets, readable type, thumb-reachable calls to action and layouts tested at real breakpoints rather than scaled-down desktop views.

Structured data where valid

Organization, service, breadcrumb and similar markup applied only when it describes content that is genuinely visible on the page.

SEO web page design: pages that answer the query and ask for the work

Ranking is the beginning of the job. The page still has to give someone a reason to contact you.

We write each page against a specific intent. A commercial query such as a service plus a city name needs proof, scope, pricing direction and a clear next step near the top. A research query needs a straight answer early, then the depth to back it up. Mixing the two on one page usually satisfies neither.

Conversion design is the same discipline applied to behaviour rather than reading. Calls to action are visible without scrolling on mobile, forms ask for the minimum needed to start a conversation, phone numbers are tap-to-call, and the page states plainly what happens after someone gets in touch.

Everything published has to earn its place. We would rather ship twelve genuinely useful pages than sixty near-identical ones, which is also how Google's guidance on people-first content and scaled content abuse points you.

Conversion elements we design in

  • A single, obvious primary action per page
  • Tap-to-call and short enquiry forms on mobile
  • Scope and pricing direction stated in plain language
  • Clear next steps and response expectations
  • Accessible focus states, labels and contrast
  • Evidence placed where doubt actually occurs
Decision framework

Web design with SEO vs design only vs SEO added later

Three common approaches, and what each one tends to mean once the site is live.

Comparison of integrated web design and SEO, design-only projects, and SEO added after launch
FactorDesign and SEO togetherDesign onlySEO added later
Site architectureSitemap and URL structure planned around demand before design startsStructure follows the visual concept; pages get merged for aestheticsStructure is renovated after launch, often with redirects and rework
ContentCopy written to match search intent and the conversion goalCopy fitted into fixed sections late in the projectContent bolted on in a blog or expanded sections after the fact
PerformanceSpeed budget set in development and verified before launchHeavy imagery and scripts discovered after go-liveOptimization limited by decisions already baked into the build
Redesign safetyRedirect map and content parity checked pre-launchURL changes handled inconsistentlyRanking losses investigated once traffic has already dropped
MeasurementAnalytics, goals and Search Console live on day oneBasic analytics, no conversion definitionBaseline data missing, so results are hard to prove
Typical cost patternOne project budget, fewer reworksLower upfront, higher cost to fix laterTwo engagements paying twice for overlapping work

Design-only work is a reasonable choice when a site exists purely to support offline sales and search is not part of the plan. SEO after the fact is sometimes unavoidable, for example when a platform is fixed. Where you have a free hand, doing both at once is usually the cheaper route.

Canadian context

What changes when the audience is in Canada

Not a different discipline, but a handful of details that are easy to get wrong from outside the country.

Bilingual and regional considerations

If you serve Quebec or operate in both official languages, language versions need their own URLs and hreflang handling. We plan that in the architecture rather than translating pages into a structure that cannot support them.

Local and regional search behaviour

Much of the demand for Canadian service businesses is city-modified: people search with a place name attached. That shapes how service and location pages are separated, linked and written.

Pricing and units that make sense here

Quotes, product pricing and shipping information presented in CAD, with Canadian address formats, provinces and phone conventions used consistently across the site and in structured data.

Who this suits

Who our web design and SEO services suit best

Service businesses

Trades, clinics, professional practices and consultancies that rely on local and regional search to fill their pipeline.

Multi-location operators

Businesses serving several Canadian cities or provinces that need a location structure search engines can understand.

Companies replacing an aging site

Sites that still rank but look and load poorly, where the redesign has to protect existing search equity.

Ecommerce and booking-driven brands

Stores and appointment-based businesses where category structure, product content and page speed directly affect revenue.

B2B and technical firms

Longer sales cycles where the site has to explain complex work clearly and rank for specific, low-volume, high-value queries.

New businesses launching properly

Founders who would rather build the searchable structure once than pay to unpick a template site in two years.

If your site is only a few years old and structurally sound, a full rebuild may be unnecessary. In that case a targeted redesign or focused technical work is often the better use of budget.

Who does the work

An SEO website design company you deal with directly

Prospering Digital provides website design and SEO services from a studio based in Vancouver, working with businesses across Canada. Projects are handled by the same small team from research through to launch, so the person who mapped your keywords is the person writing the page briefs and reviewing the build.

We publish our packages and our process rather than hiding scope behind a quote request, and we would rather tell you that a project is not worth doing than sell you a rebuild you do not need.

You can read more about the studio, meet the team, or look through recent work and case studies.

Related services

Platforms

Web design and SEO services on the platform that fits the work

The platform is chosen after we know what the site has to do. Choosing it first is how businesses end up paying to work around a tool they never needed.

WordPress

The default for content-heavy marketing sites where a team needs to publish without a developer. We build custom themes rather than stacking page-builder plugins, because plugin sprawl is the most common cause of the slow, fragile WordPress sites we are later asked to rescue.

Good for: service sites, blogs, multi-page location structures

Shopify

The pragmatic choice for standard retail catalogues, where payments, tax, inventory and shipping are already solved. Our SEO work concentrates on collection page content, internal linking and template speed, which is where most Shopify stores actually lose search visibility.

Good for: product catalogues, subscriptions, retail brands

Custom React builds

For sites with a portal, an integration, or interaction a CMS was never designed for. Server-rendered so pages remain crawlable, with a content model your team can still edit safely.

Good for: portals, calculators, booking systems, web applications

Squarespace, Wix and template migrations

We do not build new sites on closed template platforms, but a lot of our work starts on one. Migration means mapping every existing URL, preserving the pages that already earn traffic, and rebuilding the content depth those platforms usually discourage.

Good for: businesses outgrowing a DIY site without losing rankings

Platform-specific detail lives on our WordPress development and Shopify development pages, and redesign-specific planning on website redesign services.

Beyond the build

Where SEO website design stops and local search begins

A well-built site is necessary and rarely sufficient. These are the parts that sit outside the page templates, and what we can honestly influence.

Google Business Profile and the map pack

For most Canadian service businesses, the map pack sits above the organic results. Categories, service lists, service areas, photos and review velocity are what move it, and none of that lives on your website, but the site has to agree with it. We make sure the name, address, phone and service wording match exactly, because inconsistency is a slow, invisible drag on local visibility.

City and service pages that deserve to exist

A separate page per city only works if each one says something specific: real service-area detail, local pricing context, projects or examples relevant to that market. Where a business cannot support that, we recommend fewer, stronger pages instead of a set of near-identical location pages that Google treats as scaled, low-value content.

Reviews, citations and the trust layer

We help set up the request flow so reviews arrive steadily rather than in one suspicious burst, and we keep core business listings consistent. We do not buy reviews, write them, or publish rating markup for ratings that were not genuinely left by customers.

Measurement you can check yourself

Search Console, Analytics and call or form tracking configured at launch, in your own accounts. Reporting shows queries, landing pages and enquiries rather than a vanity score, and you keep access if you ever stop working with us.

If your priority is map-pack visibility in a specific market rather than a national build, start with local SEO services instead, because it is a different engagement and often the cheaper first move.
